1 Oh, that my head were waters,
And my eyes a fountain of tears,
That I might weep day and night
For the slain of the daughter of my people!
Jeremiah 9:1 NKJV
One can certainly relate to the feeling Jeremiah had as he saw the fate of his people in Judah. As Jeremiah makes clear in the next few verses, he knew that the fate of the Jews was fair and deserved. Yet, he could mourn for the suffering he knew was coming upon the people. We too can mourn as we see the suffering of humanity today. Suffering is sometimes perpetuated on the innocent and mourning is certainly appropriate for us in those circumstances. Other times suffering is brought about by unwise choices by the recipient of the suffering. How many times do I choose something because it seems good to me or because I am angry or because I convince myself I am tired of doing the 'right' thing and end up suffering through poor health or broken relationships or worse. It is appropriate for us to mourn the suffering for the suffering sake. Many will follow their choice to deny God to their eternal destruction. We can mourn the lost potential of those who for whatever reason make choices to turn away from the Lifegiver and turn to Satan, who desires to destroy them. Jeremiah wished to weep day and night for those who deliberately turned their backs on the God who worked tirelessly to save them. How God must weep at the choices we make. And how He rejoices when we allow Him to come into our hearts and wash us clean. How we also can weep as loved ones turn away from God, and how we also can rejoice when they come back to His family. Jeremiah would weep a fountain of tears, but still he would do the task of warning that God set before him. The mourning for the future destruction of his people would not prevent Jeremiah from being faithful to the job given him to spread God's true message.
Lord,
Help me today to be faithful to You in all that I do. Help me to recognize the and mourn the suffering of those around me. Help me to comfort those who need to be comforted and help me to interact with all using Your Spirit of compassion and wisdom. Thank You for the wisdom and strength You give me today, please give me a heart willing to serve You.
